What It Is

Your Dower — Your Absolute Right

Haq Mahr (dower) is a sum or property the husband is bound to give the wife as a term of the marriage. It is her exclusive property — not a gift she must return on demand — and it is recorded in the nikahnama. Dower is of two kinds: prompt (mu'ajjal), payable on demand at any time, and deferred (mu'wajjal), payable on a fixed event such as divorce or the husband's death.

Wives are frequently pressured to forgo their dower or told it was 'settled'. It was not. We recover prompt dower on demand, and deferred dower when it falls due — and where a husband contracts a second marriage without permission, the entire dower becomes immediately payable.

Ask a Question
What is Haq Mahr (dower)?
Haq Mahr is a payment — in money or property — that the husband is obliged to give the wife as a term of the marriage. It is the wife's exclusive property, recorded in the nikahnama, and does not lapse simply because time has passed or she was pressured to forgo it.
What is the difference between prompt and deferred dower?
Prompt dower (mu'ajjal) is payable on the wife's demand at any time, even during the marriage. Deferred dower (mu'wajjal) is payable on a fixed event, most commonly divorce or the husband's death. We identify which applies and recover it accordingly.
Can I recover my Haq Mahr after divorce?
Yes. Deferred dower typically becomes payable on divorce, and any unpaid prompt dower remains recoverable. A divorce does not extinguish your right to your dower — we pursue it through the Family Court.
What if the dower amount is not clearly written in the nikahnama?
Even where the amount is unclear or disputed, dower is still owed — the court can determine a proper dower (mahr-e-misl) based on the circumstances and comparable cases. We establish and recover it.
Do I have to return my Haq Mahr in khula?
Dower recovery and khula are distinct. In khula the court may require the wife to return some benefit received as consideration, which can involve the dower depending on the facts — but this is decided case by case. We advise on how it applies to your situation and protect your position.
